Many times, a family is looking for a couple of goats just to have goats! Maybe as a pet around the farm or a 4-H project that doesn’t require milking.

A neutered male is the best for this! They are called wethers. Pronounced the same as weather. They are generally neutered when they are a couple of months old and never develop the buck smell or become aggressive. My bucks have never been aggressive, but I have heard that some are.

Pet wethers are as good as a dog and some say better. They love their humans; they are gentle and obedient if they are worked with. They can easily be a “best friend”.
They have been trained to work in gardens pulling a cultivator, haul logs and generally do helpful chores around the farm. If used for a 4-H project the child can choose to do a pack goat or cart project. These are generally a progressive project that starts out simple and becomes more challenging each year. Many choose to train their goats to pull a cart like a pony! This is a fun and challenging project!

Goats are fun to take on hikes. They can carry your supplies and browse along the way. Since they want to be with their family, they will not wander far and they will come when called.
When choosing your goats, remember that the average life span is about 12 years. Our life changes a lot in that number of years, but they are still your goat and you are their people.
